Abstract: Jal jeera is a popular refreshing beverage consumed across Indian subcontinent to prevent indigestion. Cumin seeds, black pepper, ginger, asafoetida, coriander, fresh mint leaves, unripen mangoes, lemon juice, tamarind paste, black salt, and sea salt are the essential ingredients of this recipe. Though the ingredients and the composition are supported by the science and logic of Ayurvedic pharmacology, Jal jeera is not documented as a “formulation” in Ayurvedic classical texts. It is a living practice existing in communities. An analysis of the functional profile of the spices used in preparation of this popular recipe showed that it can support entire process of digestion and metabolism that is named as agni in Indian traditional medicine. Modulation of agni is vital to maintain wellness. Jal jeera and several other recipes are practiced from centuries with definite health benefits, but their pharmacological basis is yet to be established. Jal jeera and digestive churans are the examples of simple to practice yet potent health-care traditions existing from generations. Many of the ingredients of these health supporting recipes are rejuvenator (rasayana) herbs of Ayurveda and promote overall health of the consumer. However, such home remedies and health practices need to be supported with scientific facts for a wider acceptance beyond the geographical limits where they are currently practiced.
